The kit

The trip in numbers

On the field desk's map, the closest edge of Moose Mountain Provincial Park falls 3.2 km west of the casino, and the casino lies outside that boundary. Kenosee Lake village sits 8.1 km to the north; Carlyle sits 14 km to the south. Each number in this kit runs from one map coordinate to another. Highways wind and add distance, so the Carlyle Casino Field Kit leaves driving times out.

At the casino itself, the floor is open 11 am to midnight every day. The hotel has 35 guest rooms. Electric hookups (110V) are available on 6 RV spots, and tents may go on the grassy areas of the lot. Parking is free, with plenty of spaces on site.

Spec 01

Moose Mountain next door

Moose Mountain is a landscape of rolling hills with poplar and birch trees. A large network of trails serves hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers and snowmobilers. Camping, boating, swimming, tennis and golf also draw visitors to the area. The nearest edge of the park lies 3.2 km west of the casino, which sits outside the boundary.

From the casino, White Bear Lake Golf Course is 2.7 km east on a direct map line. Golf Kenosee lies 8.5 km north, mapped inside the park boundary. The compass below gives two figures for each town: one to the casino, one to the closest park edge. Carlyle, Arcola and Wawota each sit 12 km from that edge. Both columns are measured between map coordinates only, and actual roads cover more distance.

Spec 02

What is open, and when

Bear Claw's gaming floor runs daily from 11 am to midnight. A live dealer staffs The Circuit, the electronic table area, from 4 pm to midnight; earlier, its tables run on auto play. Hours in this kit follow the province's clock, Central Standard Time in every season, since Saskatchewan never switches. Bear Claw posts no holiday schedule, so the Moose Mountain field desk recommends phoning 306-577-4577 to check.

All ages are welcome at Growlers Restaurant, which serves daily between 11:30 am and 9 pm. From Sunday to Thursday the Deli & Bar operates 11 am until 11:30 pm, and last call comes at 11 pm. Its Friday and Saturday closing is 12:30 am, with last call at midnight. Staff hold the hotel front desk daily between 6 am and 9:45 pm. Guest Services houses the box office, staffed 7 days a week from 10 am until midnight.

Three ways to spend the night

There are 35 guest rooms at the hotel, including 5 suites, and every one has Wi-Fi. The Standard Queen Room sleeps 4 in two queen beds, and some are pet-friendly. Both the King Junior Suite and the King Executive Suite sleep 2 in one king bed; a jacuzzi spa tub comes only with the Executive Suite. With an adult, children under 12 stay free, and pets are placed in designated pet-friendly queen rooms at an additional charge.

RV guests at Bear Claw check in at Guest Services and register by showing a SIGA Rewards card. Security staff or the Casino Shift Manager then signs off on each stay. Stalls cannot be booked ahead; the first RV to pull in takes an open spot. Of those stalls, 6 carry 110V electric hookups. Tents may be pitched on the grassy parts of the lot, but open fire pits are banned.

Spec 04

Gaming floor specs

SIGA gives the facility as 30,000 sq ft with 133 slot machines. Slot denominations are 1 cent, 5 cents, 25 cents and $1. The Circuit holds the electronic tables: Baccarat, Blackjack, Roulette and Three-Card Poker. A live dealer runs it from 4 pm; before that the tables are in auto play.

A SIGA Rewards card costs nothing to get, carries four tiers and is honoured at all seven SIGA casinos. Card holders take 10% off food orders at SIGA restaurants and delis, plus 10% off the regular hotel rate. SIGA treats each person under 19 as a prohibited individual, barred at its casinos from gambling and from collecting winnings.

Timeline: 1993 to 2010

  1. 1993First opening, shut down after about three months
  2. 1996Reopened in November
  3. 2010Hotel opened on July 1

Gaming first came to White Bear First Nations in 1993 with the casino's opening, yet the province shut it down roughly three months later. It reopened in November 1996, and SIGA added the hotel on July 1, 2010.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) counts seven casinos, and Bear Claw, north of Carlyle, is one of them. SIGA presents itself as a non-profit led by First Nations and states that every dollar of net proceeds stays in Saskatchewan. The Moose Mountain field desk records a three-part split of casino net profit. The First Nations Trust takes 50%, while the province's General Revenue Fund and Community Development Corporations take 25% apiece.

Spec 06

Online gambling: the legal site

PlayNow.com, operated by SIGA, is the one online gambling site that Saskatchewan treats as legal. The site went live for Saskatchewan in November 2022 and admits no one under 19. Oversight of gaming falls to Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS), while regulation sits with SLGA, short for Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

Ad links on the Carlyle Casino Field Kit home page are a separate matter. They lead to a partner, an online casino in private hands, which is neither PlayNow nor operated by SIGA or Bear Claw Casino & Hotel. The Moose Mountain field desk receives a commission through them and makes no promises about that partner. A private site stays reachable even after self-exclusion with SIGA or enrolment in Game Break.

Support in Saskatchewan

  • The Saskatchewan Problem Gambling Helpline, 1-800-306-6789, is free and confidential, with trained counsellors answering 24 hours a day.
  • Bear Claw, like every SIGA casino, can arrange SIGA Voluntary Self-Exclusion, which bars the person from each of Saskatchewan's nine casinos; the chosen length runs between 6 months and 5 years.
  • No doctor's referral is needed for the free problem-gambling counselling that the Saskatchewan Health Authority offers to Saskatchewan residents.
